OK dad, but the clothes are still on my other arm!

Well today was the big day, Greyson’s first trach change.  It turned out to be a really big day as he also got a new monitoring setup in his room.  Of course the IT guys showed up to change the computer stuff, and right before they came in Dr. Holland showed up to do the trach change.  He asked the IT guys if they just wanted to do both, but thankfully they declined.  Then he asked me if I wanted to do it, but I quickly deferred back to him.  “Well OK” he said, “watch one, do one, teach one”.  The actual moment was a bit anti-climactic as he just did some preliminary things, then pulled it out and popped (well more like pushed) the new one in.  Greyson cried just a little (we could hear him cry a bit when the trach was out) but handled it very well.  They haven’t hooked him up to the other vent yet because the RT was busy helping with the change of all the monitors (every room got new ones).  His RT tonight said she might put him on the other vent if she got a chance, but we’ll see.  If not tonight they will try him on it tomorrow.

So Stacy and I cared for his g-tube and trach tonight, suctioned him and bagged him.  Through all of this I was absolutely amazed at how Greyson did.  It took Stacy and I a long time to do his trach care, but he was so patient with us and finally just went to sleep as if to say, “you guys go ahead, but I’m tired so I’m going to catch some sleep while you finish.”  Once we were done he woke back up and played with us again for awhile.

I am humbled by the trust that Greyson has with us.  Sure he is just a child and can’t fully grasp all that is going on, yet he patiently allows us to move him all around, pulling and pushing, till we get everything the way it is supposed to be.  It’s as if he knows that it is going to be OK in the end, so he will just wait and allow us to get the job done.  Even going to the point of falling asleep while we were still messing with him.  I wish I could say I responded the same way to God.  I want to trust him, really trust him, but when things aren’t going well I can’t seem to relax and allow him to take control.  It all made me think of this passage of scripture:  Matthew 11:28? “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. ?29? Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. ?30? For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

I certainly feel weary and burdened tonight, yet the truth is if I will relax enough to allow God to continue to work, He will take care of everything.  Somewhere in the distance I hear him calling me to calm down and trust him in the same way Greyson does with us.  The challenge is to get past the voices that surround us with the message that we need to do more, be more, push ourselves harder.  Jesus’ yoke is easy and his burden is light.  Tonight I think I’ll set my burdens down and allow my heavenly father a chance to do the things that need to be done, and I’ll get some rest.  Maybe when I wake up I can spend some time playing with Him before I head off to work.

  1. And a little child shall lead them. That is the first thought I had after I read your blog. Isn’t it amazing how much we learn from our children. That is such a good analogy, so simple yet so hard for us to learn. Way to go Greyson, you are such a blessing to us all.
So can you hold Greyson now or do you have to wait to get on the other vent?
    Everyone sleep well.

  2. What a big day you had. The lesson you were reminded of is the hardest lesson of all. Come unto him like little children. That trust and non questioning attitude children have. I really have been amazed at all Greyson has taught us.

So gald to here all went well. Love you all.

    Have a great day.
    Love Aunt Nana

  3. Thank you for continuing to share Greyson and his life with us. I love to watch him grow and change everyday. This little man has really helped my husband and I in our prayer life together. It has become a morning ritual and little Greyson as well as others are in the center of that prayer. Thank you for the reminder also in this last update. Something we all need to focus on more.
If you guys need anything, or any help over on this side with chores, yard work, whatever, please call me and we will be there. My number is on the SI phone tree.
    Have a great weekend.

  5. Bob and Stacy we love you! That Baby of yours is really a wonderful gift from God. Bob through all your writing we have all been inspired. How did you know that Aunt Fran needed to hear that message today…….. in all our busy schedules we all need to slow down and heed the Masters call. We all think of the schedule that you and Stacy have been keeping since September and it helps to keep us from whining…. and that baby….. what a precious little face, he always look so happy. God Bless you all.

  6. Bob – your chronicles are awesome – thank you for sharing them and Greyson with us. I copied off today’s blog and sent it to my mother-in-law, Donna Taylor, so she has it to read – she’s not into the computer age.

Young Greyson is surely a gift from God and we pray for his wellness and yours.

To you all, may the days just get better.

Good Afternoon young Greyson, be well and rest well.

    Love to you all,

    Judy & Family.

  7. Dear Bob, Stacy and Greyson, Once again I think how we should all be your encouragers but today (as often) it is the other way around. Bob, thank your for sharing that huge point that God tries to show us daily and we so often miss. You really hit it on the head for me today and I sure needed to be hit. Thank you Lord for using your faithful servants, Bob, Stacy and Greyson, to show us your love and how amazing it is..Greyson is just so precious and looking more handsome by the day. It sure is good to be able to see his face and those heart touching smiles..My door at work is just about covered but I won’t take any of them down..Everyone in my office enjoys them. We love you all so much and continue to pray for you all and keep you close in our hearts….Aunt Sue
